EAOO Webinar – Understanding Emmetropization: Retinal Regions and the Visual Signals That Guide Eye Growth

Prof. Schaeffel is a leading expert in the neurobiology of the eye, and will present his latest research on emmetropization and the mechanisms of eye growth regulation. The webinar will explore why myopia does not self-correct and highlight the important role of peripheral retinal regions in visual signal processing and eye growth control.

About the webinar

Animal studies suggest that emmetropization operates as a “closed-loop control system,” adjusting eye growth to optimize retinal image clarity. However, in myopia, this regulatory system appears disrupted. Prof. Schaeffel will discuss evidence showing that the myopic retina may lose growth-inhibition signals and reduced sensitivity to chromatic cues, with particular emphasis on the role of the peripheral retina (6–10°), which may be more important than the fovea in regulating eye growth.
